PichiAvo's work Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis C is a one-piece piece made with spray paint, acrylic, and oil on plasterboard in 2023.
The work is part of the Diaspasis series, in Greek separation; these works evoke the fragments of a wall on which a larger anthropomorphic subject was depicted, only the remains of which can now be seen. All that remains of the work Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis C is the fragment of two intertwining hands.
Originally Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis C, was part of a larger plasterboard panel, painted and then broken by the artists, creating multiple fragments and independent works. In fact, Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis A and Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis B (LINK BOTH WORKS) all depict the story of Ila and the Naiads. The myth has it that Ila had embarked with the Argonauts at the behest of Heracles; during the voyage, at a stop in search of a spring of fresh water, Ila came across the Naiads who, thunderstruck by his beauty, abducted him. There was no further trace of him.
The work was executed by the PichiAvo artists with an innovative technique, called precisely Diaspasis, which lies between painting and sculpture. The artists, who are world-famous for their murals, bring the materiality of outdoor works into the gallery with their Diaspasis series, painting figures and details on plasterboard boards that are then broken up, leaving the corners uneven. The effect these works restore is that of archaeological finds, fragments of a single drawing found and again separated in the halls of distant museums.
For the subjects of their artworks PichiAvo are inspired by Greek and Roman statues that they have seen and photographed during their travels around the world. These sculptures are reinterpreted and redrawn through their iconic style that combines Classical Art and graffiti. In this work the palette is in shades of pink and red.
Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis C measures 57 x 40 cm and weighs 3 kg.
