PICHIAVO – DIONYSUS AND ARIADNE A

The work of PichiAvo Dionysus and Ariadne A is a unique piece made with spray paint, acrylic and oil on plasterboard in 2023. 

The work is part of the series Diaspasis, in Greek separation; these works evoke fragments of a wall on which one or more subjects were depicted, of which only the remains can now be seen. In this fragment it is possible to recognize the figure of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and harvest, on a chariot carried by two panthers. The figure presents all the characteristics of the Greek deity, the crown of vines and the Tirso.

Dionysus and Ariadne A was part of a larger plasterboard panel, painted and then broken by artists, creating two autonomous works. The other figure next to Bacco, Arianna, is in fact present in the work Dionysus and Ariadne B. The whole work refers to the marriage between Bacchus and Arianna, abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos, is found by the Greek god who asks for her in marriage. 

Dionysus and Ariadne A was performed by PichiAvo artists with an innovative technique, called Diaspasis, which is placed between painting and sculpture. The artists, famous all over the world for their murals, with the series Diaspasis bring inside the gallery the materiality of the outdoor works, painting figures and details on plasterboard boards that are then broken, leaving the irregular corners. The effect of these works is that of archaeological finds, fragments of a single design found and again separated in the halls of distant museums.

For the subjects of their works PichiAvo are inspired by Greek and Roman statues that have seen and photographed during their travels around the world. These sculptures are reinterpreted and redesigned thanks to their iconic style that combines classical art and graffiti, with tags on the background and bright and intense colors. In this work the palette is in shades of blue and fuchsia. 

Dionysus and Ariadne A measures 98 x 120 cm and weighs 14 kg.
