Add Fuel - Inlay 05

“Inlay 05”, made in 2024, is a work that explores the concept of layering and integration, elements central to Add Fuel's artistic research. Measuring 134x103.7 cm, the work consists of layered ceramics and a wooden structure, combining the decorative tradition with a visual language that recalls geological and temporal processes.

The title “Inlay” suggests an operation of insertion, a dialogue between overlapping and merging materials and layers. The artist refers to the natural processes in which elements become embedded in the earth's landscape: rivers carving their beds into rock, layers of sediment deposited over time, decorative motifs embedded in the cultural memory of a place.

The work presents a fragmented composition in which the traditional azulejo pattern in shades of blue and white is interrupted by monochromatic tiles in relief, creating a visual contrast between the detailed design and the smooth, neutral surface. These tiles appear to have been “inlaid” into the structure, evoking the sedimentation and overlapping of different eras. The irregular shape of the panel reinforces the idea of a partially unearthed archaeological find, where history emerges in successive layers.

A diagonal fracture runs through the work, like a geological fault, revealing the passage of time and the action of natural forces. This element of rupture is a recurring feature in the work of Add Fuel, who uses disintegration as a tool to highlight the complexity of visual and material memory.

“Inlay 05” thus becomes a map of layering: a work that is not limited to decoration, but that tells the connection between past and present, between geology and art, between order and chaos. The artist invites the viewer to reflect on the persistence of matter and its ability to incorporate time into the forms and patterns that survive and transform.

Add Fuel: between tradition and innovation in urban art

Origins and formation

Add Fuel, pseudonym of Diogo Machado, was born in 1980 in Cascais, Portugal. After studying Graphic Design at IADE - Creative University in Lisbon, he began his career working in several design studios in Portugal and Germany. This experience allowed him to refine his artistic vision, developing a style that mixes graphic design, illustration and decorative patterns.

Artistic evolution: from design to urban art

In 2007, Add Fuel decided to move away from commercial design and focus entirely on art, initially adopting the name “Add Fuel to the Fire”. His first artistic approach is characterized by dark tones and exuberant details, inspired by pop culture, video games, comic books and science fiction. However, over time, his style evolves toward a more decorative and conceptual direction.

The link with the tradition of azulejos

Attracted by the aesthetic potential of geometry and tessellations, Add Fuel shortened his pseudonym to “Add Fuel” and began exploring the tradition of azulejos, the iconic glazed ceramic tiles typical of Portugal. Through an innovative approach, he fuses contemporary urban art with ceramic tradition, creating works that combine decorative elements with a street art aesthetic.

An art that plays with perception

Add Fuel's work is a perfect balance of symmetrical repetitions, optical illusions and hypnotic patterns. His works recall classic azulejos but conceal unexpected details, visual deceptions, and a refined sense of symmetry and composition. The trompe-l'œil effect of his creations challenges the viewer's perception, inviting closer observation.
