Add Fuel - Inherent 01

“Inherent 01”, made in 2024, is a work that synthesizes Add Fuel's artistic research on the layering of memory, matter and time. Measuring 111.7x81.3 cm, this layered ceramic composition, framed in a wooden frame, appears as a broken decorative surface, in which traditional ornamentation alternates with fractures and overlaps that reveal the complexity of its construction.

The title “Inherent”, meaning “intrinsic”, suggests the inseparable relationship between the ceramic material and its earthly origin. As the artist states, his works are born from the earth itself: each tile is a fragment that carries with it the memory of its extraction, sedimentation and transformation over time. Here, the surface seems to want to tell this story, showing different visual “eras” emerging through tears and overlapping layers.

The work plays on the duality between the perfect decoration and the rupture that runs through it. Azulejos patterns in shades of blue and white evoke the Portuguese ceramic tradition, while the diagonal fracture and apparent overlapping patterns suggest a process of excavation, as if the past and the present intersect in a visual stratigraphy. Areas of monochromatic tiles in gray contrast with more intense and vibrant areas, giving the idea of uncovering and rediscovering hidden levels of decoration.

Conceptually, “Inherent 01” reflects the link between art and geology, between human intervention and natural processes. The central fracture could be read as an earth fault, a line of rupture that allows the history of the surfaces to emerge. At the same time, the layering of the tiles creates an almost archaeological effect, as if the artist is digging into the visual memory of the material to bring to light a new narrative.

In this sense, the work is not just an exercise in decorative aesthetics, but a map of memory and material: an exploration of continuity and evolution, of the balance between creation and fragmentation. “Inherent 01” thus becomes an invitation to look beyond the surface, to understand the history hidden in the materials, forms and signs of time.

Add Fuel: between tradition and innovation in urban art

Origins and formation

Add Fuel, pseudonym of Diogo Machado, was born in 1980 in Cascais, Portugal. After studying Graphic Design at IADE - Creative University in Lisbon, he began his career working in several design studios in Portugal and Germany. This experience allowed him to refine his artistic vision, developing a style that mixes graphic design, illustration and decorative patterns.

Artistic evolution: from design to urban art

In 2007, Add Fuel decided to move away from commercial design and focus entirely on art, initially adopting the name “Add Fuel to the Fire”. His first artistic approach is characterized by dark tones and exuberant details, inspired by pop culture, video games, comic books and science fiction. However, over time, his style evolves toward a more decorative and conceptual direction.

The link with the tradition of azulejos

Attracted by the aesthetic potential of geometry and tessellations, Add Fuel shortened his pseudonym to “Add Fuel” and began exploring the tradition of azulejos, the iconic glazed ceramic tiles typical of Portugal. Through an innovative approach, he fuses contemporary urban art with ceramic tradition, creating works that combine decorative elements with a street art aesthetic.

An art that plays with perception

Add Fuel's work is a perfect balance of symmetrical repetitions, optical illusions and hypnotic patterns. His works recall classic azulejos but conceal unexpected details, visual deceptions, and a refined sense of symmetry and composition. The trompe-l'œil effect of his creations challenges the viewer's perception, inviting closer observation.

The work is fragile and a custom-made wooden crate will have to be made for it to travel safely. It will be delivered to you by insured express courier and the shipping cost will be calculated before payment is made.
