Add Fuel - Fragment 07

“Fragment 07”, made in 2024, is part of Add Fuel's artistic discourse on the fragmentation of memory and the layering of matter. The work, composed of two ceramic panels framed in wood, measures 114,3x81.3 cm and looks like a torn decorative surface, a broken mosaic revealing hidden layers of history and tradition.

The title “Fragment”, chosen by the artist for this series, recalls the concept of rupture and unfinishedness, evoking the fragmentation of the earth's soil, past civilizations and the very idea of decoration. Ceramic, a material that carries with it the memory of the earth, becomes the support for a visual game in which the classic pattern of azulejos is interrupted, torn, revealing new levels of ornamentation underneath. This overlapping effect suggests a process of archaeological excavation, in which each layer tells a temporal story, an echo of layered eras.

Shades of blue and white, characteristic of the Portuguese ceramic tradition, mingle with abstract patterns and floral details, generating a contrast between the harmony of ornament and the violence of fracture. The broken areas of the work, where the pattern seems to have been torn to reveal an older or hidden substrate, hark back to the geology and processes of erosion and sedimentation that Add Fuel explores in his work.

The work is thus configured as a visual atlas of cultural and natural memory: a reflection on the fragility and persistence of matter, on the continuous transformation of landscape and identity. “Fragment 07” is an invitation to read beyond the surface, to grasp the history inherent in materials, to recognize beauty not only in perfection, but also in the breaks and traces left by time.

Add Fuel: between tradition and innovation in urban art

Origins and formation

Add Fuel, pseudonym of Diogo Machado, was born in 1980 in Cascais, Portugal. After studying Graphic Design at IADE - Creative University in Lisbon, he began his career working in several design studios in Portugal and Germany. This experience allowed him to refine his artistic vision, developing a style that mixes graphic design, illustration and decorative patterns.

Artistic evolution: from design to urban art

In 2007, Add Fuel decided to move away from commercial design and focus entirely on art, initially adopting the name “Add Fuel to the Fire”. His first artistic approach is characterized by dark tones and exuberant details, inspired by pop culture, video games, comic books and science fiction. However, over time, his style evolves toward a more decorative and conceptual direction.

The link with the tradition of azulejos

Attracted by the aesthetic potential of geometry and tessellations, Add Fuel shortened his pseudonym to “Add Fuel” and began exploring the tradition of azulejos, the iconic glazed ceramic tiles typical of Portugal. Through an innovative approach, he fuses contemporary urban art with ceramic tradition, creating works that combine decorative elements with a street art aesthetic.

An art that plays with perception

Add Fuel's work is a perfect balance of symmetrical repetitions, optical illusions and hypnotic patterns. His works recall classic azulejos but conceal unexpected details, visual deceptions, and a refined sense of symmetry and composition. The trompe-l'œil effect of his creations challenges the viewer's perception, inviting closer observation.

The work is fragile and a custom-made wooden crate will have to be made for it to travel safely. It will be delivered to you by insured express courier and the shipping cost will be calculated before payment is made.
