“Boxed in Permanence 04”, made in 2023, represents a synthesis between the decorative tradition of azulejos and the conceptual layering typical of Add Fuel's artistic research. This work, a light box made of galvanized steel sheet with electrostatic coating, integrates a lithium battery and LED light, transforming the ornamental motif into a luminous surface that seems suspended between past and future. Measuring 90x90 cm, the composition evokes a dialogue between the permanence of matter and the fleetingness of light, emphasizing the relationship between time, geology and memory.
The choice of title, “Boxed in Permanence”, suggests a reflection on the fixity and apparent immutability of form, in contrast to the processes of transformation that the artist explores in his series. The decorative motif, reminiscent of the Portuguese ceramic tradition, appears embedded in a metal structure, a kind of crystallized fragment of history. However, the LED light lends a dynamic dimension to the work, suggesting a layered reading in which the inner glow seems to reveal what lies beneath the surface, like an echo of the geological depths.
The conception of the work aligns with the artist's poetics, which sees each of his works as a map of the earth, a visual testimony to the forces that shape our planet. The structure of steel, an industrial and durable material, contrasts with the ethereal effect of light, creating a balance between solidity and immateriality, between permanence and change. This play of juxtapositions reflects the way nature itself operates: it sediments and preserves, but at the same time erodes and transforms.
“Boxed in Permanence 05” thus fits into Add Fuel's larger discourse on the memory of matter and the connection between man and the land. The work becomes a frozen fragment of time, a luminous emanation of a larger narrative written in the layering of the earth and the patterns of history.
